Protected geographical food and drink names: UK GI schemes

In this article we look at the UK’s geographical indication (GI) schemes that protect the geographical names of food, drink and agricultural products, and the UK GI schemes registers.

Food, beverages, and agricultural goods that are produced using traditional techniques or that have a physical connection to a certain place can all be registered and protected as intellectual property. The term “geographical indication” (GI) refers to this protection.

A product’s qualities or reputation, validity, and place of origin are guaranteed by GI protection. It guards against exploitation or copying of the product name.

When registered product names are sold in Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales), they are protected by the UK GI schemes.
