The Trademarkroom has been providing trade mark protection services for over 15 years. In this time, our Clients have achieved amazing success in their chosen areas. It is important for aspiring business owners to see success while they are working hard to build their own businesses, therefore we would like to shine the spotlight on some of the Trademarkroom’s success stories and delve deeper into the thoughts and story of the brains behind these businesses. Today’s spotlight is on Open CPD. Founder Marta Kalas has kindly detailed her trade mark journey and the lessons learnt.
Please tell us about your business and the background on how it all started!
My business, Open CPD is revolutionising the accreditation sector, providing digital recognition (CPD certificates and digital badges) for lifelong learning. The platform was launched in 2023.
Why did you feel filing your brand as a registered trade mark was important enough to make
it a priority?
Protecting the brand with a trademark was essential as this marketplace is quite crowded, my competitors have their own trademarks and without the protection of a trademark, there is a risk that they encroach on our brand. It is also very important from a customer perspective to be able to differentiate between us and our competitors as our business model is very different.
Did you have any goals when it came to trade mark protection?
Primary protecting the brand and the “open” business model
What did you learn during the application process?
That choosing the right category and the right asset is very important. It is a finely nuanced space and getting it wrong can be very costly.
How did the Trademarkroom help you with the process?
The Trademarkroom helped me through the process choosing the best category and the best
combination of assets.
Do you have any advice for fellow business owners when it comes to trade marks?
Don’t ignore it, it’s not just for large companies. It depends on the market you are in and how important the brand is to your business.
